Thesis projects abroad

USA – Sister Kenny Research Center and University of Minnesota

A number of master thesis projects in the area of medical technology, rehabilitation technology and the more general concept of wellbeing are available to students at the PIEp nodes. These projects take place in Minneapolis St Paul, at either the University of Minnesota or the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. Students are funded through a combination of resources, with PIEp as coordinator.

To submit a notification of interest or for more information, please contact Lars.Oddsson @ allina.com (Director of Research, SKRI) or Martin Grimheden (PIEp EDU Coordinator).

USA – Stanford University
Master thesis project opportunities at the University of Stanford are under discussion. Inquiries can be made to PIEp's EDU Coordinator Martin Grimheden in the first instance.

During 2007/2008 PIEp sponsored eight master thesis students from LTU, KTH and LTH in a global thesis project centered at Stanford University, USA (click here to see the partner course). The project was "team-based innovation in a global setting", and Immerse Global (based in San Diego USA) was the corporate sponsor. All student travel, infrastructure and project related costs were supported, and all students spent at least a month in the USA combined with intermediate work periods in Sweden.

Sister Kenny Research Centre Masters Students

On 17th February, Philip Fahlborg and Jonas Staaf, PIEp Master Thesis project students, presented their project to Sister Kenny's clinicians and guests from the University of Minnesota and City of Minneapolis. Their research used an innovation model based on "Clinical Innovation Team" from Katarina Lund’s "Innovation Handbook" (which was awarded the 2009 PIEp Best Master Thesis Award at KTH,). Philip and Jonas have applied the process in the development of "Flamingo", a new prototype of a unique balance training machine that patients can use at home for safe balance training. Philip and Jonas showed off their working prototype, and did a fantastic job which was very well received.

Contact Philip, Jonas or Lars Oddsson for more information!
